Geopolitical tensions increase pressure on Submarine Cable Infrastructure
In a recent interview with Il Sole 24 Ore, Mediterra CEO Emmanuel Becker highlighted the growing impact of geopolitical instability on the global submarine cable ecosystem, underlining the strategic importance of digital infrastructure in an increasingly fragmented world.
According to Becker, rising tensions across key maritime corridors such as the Red Sea, the Suez Canal, the Strait of Hormuz, the Black Sea and the Baltic Sea are forcing operators and investors to rethink how international connectivity is planned and protected. As submarine cables carry the vast majority of global internet traffic, their resilience has become a critical component of economic security and digital sovereignty.
One of the key challenges is the growing need to diversify cable routes. While route redundancy has become a priority for operators seeking to reduce risks, geopolitical realities make it increasingly difficult to avoid strategic chokepoints and territorial waters. In some cases, countries crossed by cable systems may gain significant influence over maintenance operations and service providers, creating additional operational and security concerns.
Becker also noted that the Mediterranean is playing a central role in Europe’s digital future. Landing stations in Southern Europe, including locations such as Lisbon, Bilbao, Girona, Marseille and Palermo, are becoming increasingly important gateways for data flows between Europe, Africa, the Middle East and Asia. This growing strategic relevance also means that instability in neighbouring regions can have direct consequences for the continent’s digital infrastructure.
As geopolitical dynamics continue to evolve, long-term infrastructure planning must factor in not only technical and economic considerations, but also changing political and security landscapes. With submarine cable projects often requiring up to a decade from planning to deployment, anticipating future risks is becoming essential to ensuring secure, resilient and future-proof connectivity for the years ahead.
